Goodbye 2010...hello 2011!

It's weird looking back at the year.  I can't believe how quickly 2010 has come and gone.  A lot has changed in the last 365 days.  For me, 2010 had some great highs and some horrible lows.  It was a memorable, life-changing year that I will always remember.  Right now, thinking back, I remember 2010 for the lows that I suffered.

It sucks that the bad times stick out so much more than the good times.  I hope that someday I will be able to remember the good times better than the bad times.  But, right now, I am not in that place.  When I think about the last year, it is the bad things that stick out.  I guess it is my thinking though and I should focus on the good, and try to learn from the bad.

For the good, I can say that 2010 changed my life in many ways.  For one, I have learned that it is okay to lean on your family when needed.  They have been there to support me through all the changes I have been dealing with and haven't judged me for choices that I have made.  Also, I have grown closer to my family members as we have completed runs together.  The first was in June when I crossed the finish line in my first half-marathon with my dad.  It was a great run with my mom waiting for us at the finish line and Greg, Debbie and Trinity there to cheer us on.  I also was able to cross a few things off my bucket list including skydiving.

As the new year begins, I don't want to make any new year's resolutions as they always fail, but I want to make a new year's life style change.  I want to focus on working out more and eating right.  When I do that, I feel better about myself.  I have another half marathon in March to prepare for and know that exercise helps my moods as well.  I know in order to survive another year, I need to figure out what makes me happy and do that.  For now, my only goals will be to focus on my training, eat right, walk Zeus more and scrapbook my memories.  That shouldn't be too hard, right?  And hopefully by figuring out and doing what I love, I will be able to have a better 2011! And when I write about the year in review in another 365 days, it will be easy to think of all the good and hard to think about the bad...

Reading List

I have said it before, and I will say it again, I read a lot!  I am always looking for new books to add to my to-read list and am asking friends for recommendations.  I recently was browsing through free books that amazon.com offers for my kindle.  I noticed that many of the classics that I have never read are offered for free...this got me thinking.  I have run across the BBC list of must read books before but never paid much attention to them, so I have decided to make that my new reading list when I need a new book.  Not only will it make me well read, but they are free and they must be good if they are classics.  I still want to read some newer stuff in between the classics, but it will be nice to get an appreciation for the classic books (and the next time someone sends the BBC list around facebook, I will be able to mark off that I have read them all).

Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas

For an early birthday present, my mom and I spent the weekend in Las Vegas.  In San Jose, we signed up to do the Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 marathon in Las Vegas on December 5, 2010.  We decided to fly out on Thursday and then come home on Monday after the Sunday run.  Our flight out of Seattle on Thursday morning was uneventful.  Upon arriving in Las Vegas, we took a cab to our hotel, the Luxor.  After checking in, we decided to get lunch and walk around a little bit.

We ended up having a Mexican lunch at Tacos & Tequila in our hotel.  There, we both had our first margarita.  After eating, we walked around the strip.  We checked out Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, New York New York and MGM among others.   For dinner we shared a pizza at the Wolfgang Puck restaurant inside the MGM.  It was kind of cool as the National Rodeo Finals were also happening that weekend so there were tons of cowboys walking around.

On Friday, we decided to walk down to the Venetian for check-in.  There was not a coffee pot in the room so I went downstairs to Starbucks first thing in the morning and got my mom and myself a coffee.  The walk down to the Venetian and back ended up taking the better part of the day.  We took our time getting there and enjoyed walking through the booths and check-in.  We wondered through a few casinos down at that end of the strip and found a spot along the canals in the Venetian for lunch.

Once we made it back to the hotel, it was time to clean-up and get ready for dinner.  Aunt Barbara and Earl had driven down to spend some time with us and planned a special dinner for my birthday.  My mom and I took a cab to the Golden Nugget where they were staying and had a nice dinner at an Asian bistro.  It was really good food.  After dinner, we gambled a little and enjoyed the Fremont Street experience.  It was fun being down there.  We spent some time with my aunt before heading back to the hotel.

On Saturday, we headed over to the Hoover Damn and see the new bridge with my aunt and uncle.  My mom and I wanted to have an easy day without much walking so we would feel good for the run on Sunday morning.  The damn was fun and so was the bridge.  I walked to Arizona and back!  On the way home, we stopped for lunch and at a store that sold metal work before heading back to the hotel.

Sunday was the big day. We got up early and had room service breakfast before heading out to the race. It was nice staying at the Luxor as the start and finish line were next door at the Mandalay Bay.  The totally shut down the strip for the event.  It was neat at the beginning as all of the hotels were showing live coverage of the race on their big screen billboards.  I started out doing good, but then ended up bad. It was a bummer, once I realized I wasn't going to beat my previous time, I gave up.  Overall, I really enjoyed the course as it went down Las Vegas Blvd from the strip to downtown and back.  It was fun running in front of all the casinos,  but I am bummed I didn't get a better time.  My mom also felt the same way.  After the run, Bret Michaels performed and then we headed back for showers.

For lunch, we ate at Dick's Last Resort.  The food was good and the atmosphere was a lot of fun as the draw for the place is the rude waiters.  We eventually made our way down through the Bellagio to the Forum Shops at Caesar's Palace.  The Bellagio was amazing!  I loved their displays.  After some window shopping, we made our way back to our hotel and got ready for dinner.  We eventually made our way back to Fremont Street to have dinner with Barbara and Earl.  This time we ate at a cafe in the Golden Nugget.  My mom and I were both tired after the long day, so didn't stay out too late.

Our flight left Monday morning and we had to get up early to head to the airport.  It was funny there as you could see people wobbling around and knew they did the run the previous day.  Our flight amazingly ended up landing early in Seattle.  Andrew picked me up at the airport so my mom could head directly home.  Zeus was very happy to have me home and it was nice sleeping in my own bed again.  We did have a good trip and am looking forward to my next trip to Vegas which will most likely be in May for my cousin's wedding!

First Snow!

This morning I woke up to our first true snow.  Yesterday morning, we had a light dusting, but not much.
 Backyard on Sunday morning

The weatherman had predicted some snow flurries today, but I was surprised when I woke up to see a couple inches on the ground.  On top of that, it snowed all day today.  Luckily, the roads weren't too bad.  But, it is suppose to get cold and stay cold all day tomorrow so that will be interesting.

The view from my bedroom window this morning!

 Backyard this morning
The pretty roads. Luckily they weren't bad at all

Playing in the snow

What I find interesting is how much of a big deal the snow is for everyone.  I mean the news is going crazy with "storm coverage".  But, it snows every year, so I don't really get what the big deal is.  I mean I know the snow is early, and we are expected to have a hard winter, but come on.  A couple inches isn't that  big of a deal.

I have to admit, I do love it though.  It is fun living in a place where we actually have seasons.  And, having the snow makes it feel more wintery.  It is really pretty too to see everything covered in white and being able to bindle up and feel the crisp air.

Hobby Time

My mom recently told me that I need to do something besides lay around reading all day.  She recommended me finding a hobby.  I always liked being crafty.  I enjoy putting together scrapbooks and doing needle work.  However, even though I love scrapbooking, I have lost some motivation.  It's hard to want to put together a book of memories when right now isn't the best time of my life.  Don't get me wrong, there has been some great moments recently, but overall, I feel a constant turmoil that I don't necessarily want to remember.

Anyways, I decided that I do want to start doing something.  So, I decided to make frames with the recent 1/2 marathon events I have done so I can display them.  I thought it would be a fun way to display my accomplishments (and gave me a way to use the ugly green shirts they gave us). Here is what I have created:

I really like them and can't wait until I can find a good place to hang them in my house.  I am also going to try and scrapbook more as it is something I enjoy.

Kindle

A few weeks ago, my friend Andrew bought me a Kindle.  He knows that I love to read and thought that it would be something that I would enjoy.  I was a little hesitant at first.  I liked the idea of an eReader, but wasn't sure I was ready for one.  I am not always the first to grab at the latest technology and I was skeptical of it.  I know that eReaders have been around for some time, but for me, they still seemed too "new".  I thought for sure I would miss reading a paper book and wouldn't be able to adapt to reading on a little tablet.

To say the least I LOVE IT!!!  I finished my first book last week.  As soon as I was done, I went to read a real book from the library and couldn't do it.  I love that the Kindle is so small and lightweight.  I prefer to read in bed before falling asleep and it is so much easier to hold my little Kindle than a thick hard cover book.  The only downfall so far is that not all books are offered for the Kindle.  I wanted to read the final book of an older series I have been enjoying and it isn't yet available.  However, I am sure more books will become available as the eReader popularity grows.

I still will attempt to read and take advantage of the library books that I have grown accustomed to.  The library is great and FREE.  But, I do enjoy my Kindle and know that my bookcases will no longer continue to fill up with paperback books as any books that I decided to purchase from here on out will be in the digital format.

Christmas Cheer

Normally, Christmas time is my favorite time of year.  I like the crispness of the air, the happy decorations and spending time picking out the perfect gifts for people.  It's the one holiday I would decorate the house and enjoy the feeling of love that surrounds Christmas.  Getting bundled up and going from store to store enjoying the sights and sounds used to be something I looked forward to.

I have a feeling this year, the holiday season is going to be hard for me to get through.  I already hate going to the stores where Christmas items are out.  I am trying to accept the fact that I won't have a tree and probably won't set out my decorations.  What's the point of decorating if there is no one here to celebrate with?  Why put up a tree if there aren't going to be presents to put under it?  My normal excitement for seeing the first hints of Christmas is completely gone.  Now, it brings me pain knowing that I will be spending the majority of the season alone.  I know for the actual day, I will see my parents and grandma like normal.  However, the rest of the time, it will just be Zeus and me at home.  I think this is one of those things people don't think about when they separate.  I knew that I would be single, but I never thought about being alone for the holidays.  I didn't think about how this season would be difficult to get through until now...

San Jose Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 Marathon Weekend

After the last Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 marathon that we did in Seattle in June, my parents and I decided to sign-up for the Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 marathon in San Jose.  We thought it would be fun to do and we would be able to visit some family while we were down there.  My parents had a flight from Bellingham with a layover in Seattle.  Andrew gave me a ride to the Seattle airport where I was able to meet up with my parents and we all had the same flight into San Jose.  The flight was uneventful for the most part, however, my mom did get to see some major butt crack on the Bellingham flight which was the highlight of her day.  Debbie picked us up at the airport in San Jose.  I was amazed by the terminal as it was totally redone from the last time I was there.

We headed to Greg and Debbie's house and relaxed for a little bit.  I got to stay in Trinity's room with her guinea pig that I decided to call Chester even though its real name was Bilbo (or something like that) while my parents stayed in the guest room.  Debbie had made salad and spaghetti for dinner which we all enjoyed after the flight.  After dinner, we took a quick walk around the block with their new German Shepard puppy Koda.

On Saturday we woke up and headed into San Jose for check in. We were a little disappointed as the expo wasn't as big as the one in Seattle.  My parents and I decided to sign-up for the Dallas event that is in March 2011 there.  I also decided for my 30th birthday I wanted to do the Las Vegas event, which is the Sunday before my big day.  My mom decided to sign-up for that one as well.  I am excited to go and do something memorable for my dirty-thirty.  Greg and Debbie are thinking about coming along as well and we are trying to talk Melinda into it also.

After check in we headed up to Henry Coe State Park to check out the Tarantula Festival.  We had a barbecue lunch there in the shade.  There wasn't too much going on but we did see a couple spiders, snakes and owls.  They also had a children's activity room set-up to make small spiders to take home so my mom, Trinity, Debbie and I all made a souvenir.

When we got back from there, it was Greg's nap time so my mom and I took Trinity with us for a couple errands while my dad sat out by the pool to enjoy the sun.  One of our stops was to Trader Joe's where they provided me an extensive list that showed all of their gluten free items.  It was fun walking through the store looking for the things listed; it kind of felt like a treasure hunt.  I did get some snacks and some protein bars so I would have options if there were no gluten free food for me to eat and I was hungry.

For dinner we headed into downtown Morgan Hill and ate at Ricatoni's which has a deli atmosphere and really good food.  I was happy to see that they had gluten free pizza so I had a chicken and pesto pizza for dinner.  After dinner we went to Trinity's favorite frozen yogurt place for dessert.   It was still fairly early when we got home and we all went to bed early on Saturday to prepare for Sunday's run.

Poor Greg was up most of the night with an upset stomach and wasn't feeling good Sunday morning as well.  As we were getting ready to leave, he wasn't sure if he was going to run as he was feeling so crappy.  We drove into San Jose and were able to find parking near the start/finish line.  Melinda met us down there so she could hang out with Trinity while my parents, Greg, Debbie and I ran.  My main goal for the day was to do it in less time than the Seattle run and I was hoping to do it in under three hours.

The run was really nice.  The course was very flat and there were good bands along the way.  Some of the neighborhoods we ran through were really nice and it was cool to see people sitting in their front yards cheering us on.  I still wasn't feeling 100% after the cold I had the week before and when I stopped around mile seven for a potty break, it was hard to get going again as I was starting to cough really bad.  I was able to cross the finish line quicker than I did in Seattle and have a new PR of 3:04:54.  I didn't hit under three hours, but at least now I have a goal for Las Vegas.

After the run, my parents and I decided to get our medals engraved with our name and time.  Greg and Debbie hitched a ride with Melinda as Aunt Barbara and Earl were at their house.  They had driven up for the day to visit.  My parents and I stopped for coffee and Subway before returning to the house.  I was fairly tired that afternoon but visited with the family after.  Patricia and Lola stopped by as well which was fun since Lola is at such a fun age.  To relax our muscles, we went in the hot tub and enjoyed the sun by the pool in the afternoon.

Around 4:00 my parents and I left to go to Santa Cruz for the evening for dinner with friends.  When we got downtown we made a quick trip to Borders and then headed up to Pacific Wave.  My long-time friend Morgan found me in Pacific Wave.  For dinner we met with Terry and Clarice Haschert, Jim and Karen Healy, Ryan and Krista Healy and Morgan.  There were ten of us all together and we ate at El Palomar.  The restaurant wasn't as crowded as it used to be, but the company was good.  We ended up staying there for over two hours.  Then, we walked down to Marini's where I got some after dinner candy and some chocolate covered bacon to bring home to Andrew.

My flight left Monday morning.  My parents were staying until Tuesday, but I decided to be responsible and not miss class and come home a day early.  Debbie and my mom took me to the airport and on the way we dropped Trinity off at school.  I got to the airport in enough time to get a coffee before boarding.  The flight was uneventful.  We landed smoothly into foggy Seattle where Andrew was waiting for me right outside the gate.

I had a nice weekend in California and am excited for the next event in Las Vegas.  Now, it's back to training!  If you want to see more pictures, check out my flickr account.

Bellingham Bay Marathon....well 5k

Last weekend I headed up north to run in the Bellingham Bay Marathon's 4th annual event.  My parents and I decided to run in the 5k as we have our next half marathon coming up on October 3.  The run was on Sunday morning and on Saturday we picked up our race packets.  I had started to feel under the weather the week previous and was hoping to feel better by Sunday morning.

To say the least, I wasn't feeling that great as I woke up on the soggy Sunday morning of the run.  I took some medicine and hoped for the best for the run.  I was hoping that since it was only a 5k, it wouldn't be that bad.  Luckily, the rain let up for the most part for the run.  Overall, it was hard.  I felt really weak throughout the race and soon after crossing the finish line started coughing really hard.  I was hoping to beat my time from the 5k I did a year ago, but that didn't happen.  I was disappointed with that but know that my performance was hindered due to being sick.

After the race, my mom commented that she wouldn't have run in the event if she was as sick as I was so that made me feel a little better.  She also commented that the race was harder than even she was anticipating.  Both my mom and dad made great time and hugely improved on their time from a year ago.  I was also happy to think that my pace improved by about 1 minute per mile from the 15k we did a few weeks ago.  Now, with the 1/2 marathon around the corner, I am hoping that I will be healthy, will be able to keep improving on my pace and finish the run quicker than I did in June.

Puyallup Fair

On Tuesday, Andrew and I took advantage of the sunny day and hit the Western Washington Fair in Puyallup.  He had gotten a couple free tickets from a friend at work so I made him take me.  I love fairs and was looking forward to walking around and doing some people watching.  I also have fond memories of the fair in Santa Cruz growing up and the little kid in me couldn't wait.

We got there around 10:30 in the morning and walked around checking out the booths most of the morning.  It was nice getting there early as it wasn't annoyingly crowded.  I had to cheat on my diet and try something from Everything Fried. We went with the daily special of a twinkie and 3 oreos.  The twinkie was okay, but I actually really liked the oreos.  Right before we left, we stopped and watched some mutton busting which was super cute.  Some of the kiddos were amazing at how long they could hang on to the sheep.  Overall, we had a nice day and it was fun to walk around the fair and enjoy some time together.
